Just outside Bonaire’s capital, Kralendijk, in the countryside (the kunuku), a unique and special housing development is emerging, inspired by traditional Dutch Colonial architecture of a bygone era. Many of Bonaire’s attractive traditional homes have fallen into disrepair and this heritage is quickly disappearing due to the lack of general preservation policy on the island. The ‘Oud Lagoen’ (pronounced “out lagoon”) or Old Lagoon development is re-introducing this magnificent traditional style to Bonaire with high quality and authenticity.

To date, seven replicas have been meticulously drawn and recreated paying great attention to traditional detail, with a stunning end result. Positioned in a secure ‘cul de sac’ a total of 26 of these homes will form an ode to the island‘s architectural heritage. At the same time, the development’s layout, style, uniformity, landscaping and high quality of building materials used will more than retain property value and allow for a secure return on investment.

Oud Lagoen is well located with distances by car to the sea and town center 4 minutes away, and to the International airport, 8 minutes.

The impressive main entrance to ‘Oud Lagoen’ (see picture below) immediately creates a feeling of grandeur upon arrival. Future development plans entail a main propertyaccess control system as well.

Lot sizes vary from 741 m2 (7,975 sq. ft) to 1264 m2 (13,605 sq. ft.). Living spaces including porch / terrace areas vary from 154 m2 (1,650 sq. ft) to 325 m2 (3,500 sq. ft.) Certain layouts have optional basements for additional bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet areas. Prices range from US$ 299.000 to US$ 465.000

The Project
Located near a quiet bay called “Lagoen”, the “Oud Lagoen” (Dutch for “the old Lagoon”) development was inspired by the flavor and spirit of traditional Dutch Plantation architecture from 150 years ago. The developer strives to re-introduce that style through these very attractive homes since many of the originals have fallen into disrepair.

The next phases
Phase 1 has been completed. Phase two is ready for development and will house three classic villas with optional swimming pools: The PUEBLO NOVO (lot 17c), The Lima(lot 18c) and the Karpata (lot 19c).

  The entrance
The grand entrance to Oud Lagoen and its surrounding walls compliment the unique design of the project. The villas are divided by white picket fences that are very caractaristic to Bonaire. The stylish setting welcomes you to a time when life was less stressful and more peaceful. The “Homeowners´ Association” guarantees the project’s uniformity.

  Classic features
Great effort was made to reproduce authentic mouldings for the villa’s roofs and gutters. The results are exeptional. Together with traditional white wooden shutters, handmade, iron cast door latches (imported from the U.K.) and Colombian hardwood floors throughout the houses, the Oud Lagoen villas give you a grand colonial feeling.

  The gardens
The private gardens were designed and landscaped by a professional landscape architect. By using imported tropical plants and trees, a sense of depth and balance was achieved to enhance the colonial setting. Over 60 trees and 3,000 plants create a lush oasis. There is plenty of room for sun tanning or simply a gentle stroll to discover an unusual flower or tree.

  The interiors
Altough these villas may look like they’re 150 years old, they have all modern conveniences. We combined adjustable halogen lighting and cable TV (in practically all rooms) with cottage style kitchens that are hand painted in an aged effect. There are abundant electrical outlets and air conditioning ducts installed in case the constant breeze doesn’t cool you down at night.
